Theme: Rotavirus Landscape in Africa – Towards Prevention and Control
The Centre for Infectious Disease Research in Zambia (CIDRZ) and Absolute Return for Kids (ARK) in collaboration with the University Teaching Hospital, the Zambian Ministry of Community Development Mother and Child Health, and the Ministry of Health cordially invite you to the 8th African Rotavirus Symposium to be held in Livingstone, Zambia on 12-13th June 2014.
This annual event is organised by the African Rotavirus Network (ARN) – a network of global rotavirus researchers, African Ministries of Health, WHO, and key partners such as UNICEF, GAVI Alliance, BMGF, PATH, the Pharmaceutical industry and other stakeholders.
The ARN was established in 1998 to determine the rotavirus burden of disease, the strain diversity and to increase awareness about rotavirus in Africa. It established an annual symposium to enable rotavirus scientists, clinicians, policy-makers and health officials to share ideas, expertise and learning across organisations and countries. Now with the availability of safe and effective rotavirus vaccines – and GAVI funding for new vaccine introduction – the need to share rotavirus disease and prevention strategies in real-time is heightened. The growing in-country experience of vaccine introduction and scientific endeavour in Africa is encouraging; this 8th Symposium will provide opportunity to accelerate momentum.
8th African Rotavirus Symposium Objectives:
1. Review rotavirus research and share current global epidemiological trends;
2. Share experiences regarding introduction of rotavirus vaccines into the country EPI programmes; and
3. Enable networking for research, academia and career growth.
The symposium venue will be on the shores of the mighty Zambezi River overlooking Victoria Falls/Mosi-o-Tunya or the ‘Smoke that Thunders’ in Livingstone, Zambia.
