On 18th June, CIDRZ hosted advocates and journalists from Malawi, Zimbabwe and Zambia at an AVAC (Global Advocacy for HIV Prevention www.avac.org) and ZAMCOM (Zambian Institute of Mass Communication) – sponsored HIV Vaccines Regional Media Symposium. The aim of the symposium was to discuss about how HIV prevention research – and specifically HIV vaccine research – is conducted. The meeting was facilitated by AVAC’ s Kay Marshall and Angelo Kaggwa- Katumba, HIV prevention advocate Dr Mannasseh Phiri, HIV prevention researchers Dr Margaret Kasaro of CIDRZ and Dr William Kilembe of the Zambia Emory HIV Research Project (ZEHRP) and various advocates. The aim was to discuss the importance of knowledgeable and responsible journalism in reporting about HIV prevention research and programmes.The event gave the opportunity for journalists to meet the researchers and tour a research clinic.
