CIDRZ Executive

Dr. Jeffrey Stringer, MD, CIDRZ’s Director and CEO, is Professor of Obstetrics & Gynecology at UAB and holds secondary appointments in the departments of Medicine, and Epidemiology & International Health. Based full-time in Zambia since 2001, Dr. Stringer has been with the University of Alabama since receiving his medical degree from Columbia University in 1995. Dr. Stringer is an internationally recognized expert in clinical and operations research in the prevention of mother-to-child HIV transmission (PMTCT) and HIV treatment. With his many partners and collaborators he has helped to developed one of the largest HIV prevention and treatment programs in the world.

Iris Mwanza Ph.D. is Deputy Director and Chief Operating Officer, overseeing all aspects of management, administration, and operations for CIDRZ. She is a Zambian and US educated and trained lawyer (University of Zambia, Cornell University) and International Relations specialist (Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies) with professional experience in both the private and public sectors. Prior to returning to Zambia to join the CIDRZ team, she worked at Arnold & Porter law firm; a Youth NGO - Fresh Lifelines for Youth; and most recently the World Bank.

AnnabAnnabelle Degroot is CIDRZ's Chief Financial Officer. Ms. Degroot holds a Bachelors and Masters in Economics from Cambridge University, U.K., and is A.C.A. certified by the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales. Ms. Degroot has over 10 years’ experience auditing organizations and developing financial strategies throughout the world. She has served as consultant to the World Bank and Price Waterhouse in Zambia, assistant manager at PriceWaterhouseCoopers in London, financial analyst for GlaxoSmithKline in the United Kingdom, and manager for corporate finance and practice at DCDM consulting in Zambia.

Mulombe Nkhoma, the Internal Audit Director, is a fellow of the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants(ACCA), UK, and a member of the Zambia Institute of Chartered Accountants (ZICA). He alsoholds a Bachelors Degree in Accountancy from the Copperbelt University. Mr. Nkhoma has extensive experience in auditing and finance having worked as an external auditor and consultant with PricewaterhouseCoopers for several years in Zambia and West Africa. He later served in various capacities including: Privatization Team Leader (Asset Monitoring), Chief Finance Officerand Head of Audit before joining CIDRZ in his current position.

Elizabeth Stringer is an American obstetrician-gynecologist who relocated to Lusaka, Zambia after completing her residency at UAB in 2001. She holds an MSc in Epidemiology from the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine. She is an Associate Professor in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of Alabama at Birmingham and serves as a key member of the CIDRZ research team. Dr. Stringer's research focuses on contraception in HIV-infected women and on field evaluations of services to prevent mother-to-child HIV transmission. In addition to research, she is involved with CIDRZ large service delivery programs around mother-to-child HIV prevention and provision of antiretroviral drugs to pregnant women.

 

Marcus Achiume is Information and Communication Technology Director, and oversees the management of IT infrastructure and software systems that support the CIDRZ organization. A trained software professional, he received his Bachelors degree in Computer Science from Western Michigan University, and his Masters in Software Systems Engineering from George Mason University. His experience includes the design, development and management of enterprise systems for organizations such as Lockheed Martin, Accenture, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and other agencies of the U.S. Government. Before joining the CIDRZ team, he served as Technical Director with ViewSet Corporation in Herndon, Virginia.

 

Angela Chisembele - Taylor Bsc Pharm is the Head of Pharmacy for CIDRZ . She is a Zambian and holds a Bachelors degree in Pharmacy from the Robert Gordon University Aberdeen, Scotland. Her work experience includes 7 years in United Kingdom in working for small independent community pharmacies to supervising a large number of staff in a national pharmacy chain- Boots the Chemist. She had also spent a brief period at Ipswich Hospital Pharmacy Department before relocating back to Zambia in August 2003. At CIDRZ she oversees all the Pharmacy aspects of management, administration and operations for both the CIDRZ Research and Service Programs.

 

Beatrice Mwila is the Director of Human Resources. She holds an MBA in Human Resource Management from Canterbury University, UK, Bachelor of Business Administration from New Port University – UK, Post Graduate Diploma in Management – MANCOSA, RSA, Advanced Diploma in Human Resource Management – University of Johannesburg, RSA, Higher Diploma Personnel Management& Industrial Relations, Business Management and Administration, Accounting in Business and Management, UK. Ms Mwila has over 25 years working experience in Human Resource, Finance, Business Administration and Marketing in multicultural corporate, private and non-governmental organizations locally and internationally. She has further specialized in Recruitment (local and international), Organisation Development, Job Evaluations, Stress Management, Coaching for Performance, Human Resource Audits, Strategic Planning and Implementation, Organisation Performance Evaluations and Disaster Preparedness Management. She has served as Executive Director – Zambia Federation of Employers, Director Human Resource and Administration – World Vision, Finance and Administration Manager / Business Liaison and Development Coordinator – PricewaterhouseCoopers, Southern Region Area Manager – Reckitt & Colman, Administrative Assistant – Deloitte & Touche

 

CIDRZ BOARD

Orlean Moyo (Board Chair) is the National Director for the African Housing Fund in Zambia, an international organization focusing on poverty reduction, housing and shelter, and micro-credit, since 1997. Mrs. Moyo is an accomplished commercial banker who was the first woman to hold the position of Operations Director of a major commercial bank in Zambia. Mrs. Moyo has served as a Director of the Zambia Flying Doctor Service Board, Chair of the Zambian non-governmental organization People Act Foundation, and is Board Chair of Indo-Zambia Bank Limited.

Robert R. Rich, M.D (Vice Chair) is Senior Vice President for Medicine of the University of Alabama at Birmingham and Dean of the School of Medicine at UAB. Dr. Rich is currently Editor-in-Chief of The Journal of Immunology and is on several other editorial boards. Current positions held by Dr. Rich include Councilor of the American Clinical and Climatological Association, member of the Board of Trustees of the Association for Assessment and Accreditation of Laboratory Animal Care International, member of the Board of Directors of Americans for Medical Progress, member of the Advisory Panel on Research of the Association of American Medical Colleges, and member of the Council of the American Association of Immunologists.

Elizabeth Mataka is Executive Director of the Zambia National AIDS Network (ZANAN), a network that promotes coordination among non-governmental organizations in Zambia and disburses funds to groups involved in AIDS, TB, and Malaria. She has been a founding member of a several national and international HIV/AIDS institutions, including the Southern African Network of AIDS Service Organisations (SANASO), International Children in Need Network, and the Zambian National AIDS Council. She is currently Vice Chair of the Board Global Fund to fight AIDS, TB and Malaria and is the UN Special Envoy for Aids in Africa.

Eli Capilouto, DMD, ScD, MPH is Provost at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) and the former dean and professor at the UAB School of Public Health. During his tenure as dean, the school undertook innovative budgeting, management evaluation and reward policies. He is currently serving on the National Advisory Dental and Craniofacial Research Council of the National Institutes of Health. He was a member of the Pew Health Professions Advisory Panel for Dentistry and has served as a consultant to the National Academy of Sciences Institute of Medicine and the American Association of Academic Health Centers.

Dipak Patel has been involved in Zambian politics since 1991. Mr. Patel has several ministerial positions including Minister of Youth, Sports, and Child Development and Minister of Commerce, Trade, and Industry. Mr. Patel has served on a variety of parliamentary committees, including budget appropriations, economic affairs, and foreign affairs and was Co-Chair for the World Trade Organization for the Least Developed Country Negotiations. Mr. Patel was the recipient of the Defender of Democracy Award from Parliamentarians for Global Action.

Max Michael, M.D. is Dean of the UAB School of Public Health and Professor in its Department of Health Care Organization and Policy. Dr. Michael is a board-certified internist. Dr. Michael was Chief of Staff and Chairman of the Department of Medicine and Director of Outpatient Services at Cooper Green Hospital and has served as Chief Executive Officer and Medical Director of Jefferson Health System/Cooper Green Hospital in Birmingham, Alabama. Dr. Michael serves on a number of local boards including Birmingham Area Chapter of the American Red Cross and Gateway.

Mannasseh Phiri, M.D. is a Zambian physician experienced in the clinical management of HIV and health related mass media. Dr. Phiri has been involved in health education for over 20 years and has combined his knowledge of health and mass media to contribute significantly to the dissemination of information on HIV. He is currently the chairman of the Southern African HIV Clinicians Society-Zambia Branch and serves on several public health NGOs and institutions. Dr. Phiri consults widely on HIV/AIDS treatment programs and on health communication strategies for international and domestic organizations.

Richard Marchase, PhD, is the Vice President for Research at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. He serves as Vice-chair of the Board of the UAB Research Foundation and is a member of the Board of Southern Research Institute and Alabama EPSCoR. He is a past Associate Editor of The Anatomical Record and was on the editorial board of the American Journal of Physiology:Cell. He is currently on the Editorial Board of the journal SHOCK. Dr. Marchase is active in several national organizations and is currently Vice President of the Federation of American Societies for Experimental Biology, a confederation representing over 80,000 life scientists.

Hon. Bradford Machila is trained as a lawyer and currently serves as Minister of Lands for the Republic of Zambia. He was a partner in a Zambian law firm prior to his election as Member of Parliament and appointment to Cabinet Minister. Mr. Machila is a member of the Law Association of Zambia and the International Bar Association.
