The Zambian government’s rapid scale-up of HIV prevention, care and treatment services has been among the most successful in Africa, and now 13 years into the response tremendous progress has been made. Access to lifesaving antiretroviral treatment has been expanded, prevention programmes are making impact, and losses in life expectancy have begun to reverse. These substantial achievements are the result of strong political leadership, and considerable financial support from international donors such as the U.S. President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) through the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) partnership. These important partnerships, among others, have enabled CIDRZ to contribute to Zambia’s future by facilitating the delivery of high-quality healthcare services for over 2 million individuals within the public health system.
