The SI department provided data collection and management support to the Bill & Melinda Gates funded Better Information for Health (BetterInfo) study which involved collecting data for HIV positive patients considered to be lost to follow-up. The data collection tool was developed using open data kit (ODK), a free and open-source software for collecting, managing, and using data in resource-constrained environments. ODK allowed for the collection of data offline and submission of the data when internet connectivity was available. Customized ODK forms with real time data validation and consistency check features were used to collect study data across Lusaka, Eastern, Southern and Western provinces in Zambia.
