CIDRZ and DHAPP Review HIV Programme Progress to Strengthen Sustainability

A joint team from CIDRZ and the Department of War HIV/AIDS Prevention Program (DOW/DHAPP) during a meeting held at CIDRZ Headquarters to review progress under the HIV programme implemented in collaboration with the Zambia Defence Force Medical Services.

The Centre for Infectious Disease Research in Zambia (CIDRZ) recently hosted a delegation from the United States Department of war HIV/AIDS Prevention Programme (DOW/DHAPP) to review progress made under the HIV prevention and treatment and identify opportunities to strengthen its long-term sustainability.

The visit provided an opportunity for DHAPP HQ and local office to assess programme performance, reflect on achievements, identify gaps and discuss strategies to strengthen local ownership, programme efficiency and the continued delivery of essential HIV services within the Defense Force.

Mr Teri Yiyen, the Desk Officer for the Department of Defense HIV/AIDS Prevention Program (DHAPP), commended CIDRZ for the work accomplished so far, noting the importance of building on the progress made through continued collaboration and knowledge sharing. Mr Teri expressed gratitude over CIDRZ dedication and transparency in their work culture.

He emphasised the need to strengthen the Zambia Defence Force’s capacity to independently sustain programme activities and maintain the milestones achieved. Teri also highlighted the importance of identifying gaps in HIV care, particularly understanding why some people living with HIV present with advanced disease and continue to die despite the availability of treatment.

“I am happy to see where we are, but there is still work to be done. We need to make the necessary adjustments and understand why people continue to present with advanced HIV disease and die. Our goal should be to do everything possible to save lives,” he said.

Meanwhile, Dr Mwangelwa Mubiana-Mbewe, the Defense force prevention project Director at CIDRZ, reaffirmed the organization’s commitment to address the gaps identified during the review and working closely with the Defense Force to strengthen programme implementation.

And Edah Lifuka, DOW/DHAPP Zambia Program manager, encouraged staff to remain committed to delivering quality services, strengthening accountability and working together to ensure that the programme continues to make a meaningful difference.

Through its collaboration with the Zambia Defense Force and DOD/DHAPP, CIDRZ continues to support efforts to strengthen HIV prevention and treatment services while building local capacity to sustain progress and safeguard the health of military personnel and their families.
