Enhancing Laboratory Performance in Zambia’s HIV Surveillance: Key Findings and Recommendations.

Raymond Chiinda presenting findings on the continuous quality improvement (CQI) of testing laboratories in Zambia’s recent HIV surveillance programme.

The Centre for Infectious Disease Research in Zambia (CIDRZ) proudly participated in the 16th Annual National HIV/TB/STI/Viral Hepatitis Conference, where Raymond Chiinda presented key findings on the continuous quality improvement (CQI) of testing laboratories in Zambia’s recent #HIV surveillance programme.

The objective of the continuous quality improvement was to assess the adherence of testing laboratories to quality standards.

The findings revealed that, overall, laboratory performance in the recency programme followed standard operating procedures. However, discrepancies were still noted between laboratories, highlighting areas for improvement.

To address these issues, the study recommends the initiation of additional quality improvement projects, alongside intensified mentorship for laboratory staff.

It also stresses the importance of gaining buy-in for routine CQI activities from all stakeholders to ensure long-term success and consistency across laboratories. These steps will contribute to strengthening the reliability and effectiveness of HIV surveillance efforts in Zambia.
