CIDRZ’s USAID Zambia TBLON project, in collaboration with the Ministry of Health Zambia, recently hosted a vital focus group discussion at Chikankata Mission Hospital.
This gathering brought together community leaders, health officials, and other local stakeholders to assess current #TB initiatives, address challenges, and develop strategies to enhance community engagement in eradicating tuberculosis.
Senior Headman Shapande of Chikankata district expressed gratitude for the initiative, highlighting the crucial role of grassroots involvement in creating awareness for TB.
“This initiative empowers the community to be part of the solution. Engaging traditional leaders and the local populace is essential in eliminating TB in our chiefdom,” he stated.
Petronella Chilala and Loveness Kaniini, dedicated community-based volunteers supported by USAID, shared their challenges in educating people about TB, citing misconceptions, such as TB being caused by witchcraft or curses, as a major hindrance to understanding and accepting medical treatment.
Despite these obstacles, Petronella affirmed their commitment to breaking the myths surrounding TB.
Meanwhile, Beatrice Sambondu, a Community Mobilisation Officer from CIDRZ’s sub-partner AFYAMZURI, praised the team’s efforts in combating TB.
“I am proud of our team’s tireless work to educate people about TB, its symptoms, and the importance of early medical intervention. Community awareness is a powerful tool in combating TB.”
