The Centre for Infectious Disease Research in Zambia (CIDRZ) has supported the Zambia Correctional Service (ZCS) with 172 industrial electric fans worth more than half a million Kwacha in a bid to improve ventilation in Correctional Facilities.
The fans were received by ZCS Commissioner in charge of Corrections, Namataa Muyumbelo, who thanked CIDRZ for its continued support, which would go a long way in creating a healthy environment for inmates.
The support worth 774,000 was made possible through CIDRZ’s USAID-funded Tuberculosis Local Organizations Network (TBLON) project. TBLON’s prisons component aims at developing and capacitating health systems and services in correctional facilities.
Speaking at the official handover ceremony in Kabwe, CIDRZ HIV/TB Technical Advisor Clement Monga said the donation of the industrial fans to correctional facilities would help mitigate the spread of TB, Covid 19 and other infectious diseases most common in prisons.
He added that the fans would be distributed not only to prisons in Central but also in Lusaka and Southern provinces.
