CIDRZ’s PEN-Plus hosts ‘Tulibonse’ Camp for Type 1 Diabetes Patients.

CIDRZ’s Package of Essential Interventions for Severe and Chronic Non-Communicable Diseases (PEN-Plus NCDs), in collaboration with the Diabetic Association of Zambia and the Sonia Nabeta Foundation (SNF) of Uganda is hosting a four-day boot camp for Type 1 diabetic patients receiving care at the PEN-Plus clinics in Mwachisompola,Kapiri Mposhi and Matero first-level hospitals.

The camp, being held under the theme “Tulibonse,” meaning “We are together,” is providing a platform for patients to share their personal experiences, support one another, and interact with medical staff on issues around Type 1 diabetes. During this camp, the patient’s blood sugar levels are monitored daily before meals and emergency kits are available in case of any emergency.

The camp is part of the PEN-Plus clinics’ strategy to enhance patient-centred care for people living with non-communicable diseases and ensure their voices are louder, enabling them to take the lead whilst leveraging their lived experiences.

CIDRZ’s Dr Bavin Mulenga said the camp aimed to equip the Zambian team with the skills and knowledge needed to conduct Type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) camps, and secondly to empower patients with the knowledge and skills to manage their condition from home.

Meanwhile, Diabetic Association of Zambia Secretary General Dr Gilbert Mukuka said the camp offers many benefits, not only for the young diabetes warriors but also for everyone involved, including healthcare providers, counsellors, data analysts, and DAZ members.

“As you embark on this journey, I encourage you to embrace the camp’s activities fully. Be open and use this opportunity to enhance your understanding and skills in managing diabetes. By the end of the camp, I hope you will feel empowered, more knowledgeable, and ready to be a resource and inspiration within your communities,” he said.
