CIDRZ Strengthens Research Quality Through SOP Training.

As part of its ongoing efforts to strengthen the Research Department and enhance quality, the Centre for Infectious Disease Research in Zambia (CIDRZ) conducted a Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) training.

The three-day, high-impact training held under the theme “Excellence in Action: Co-Creating a Culture of Compliance” was designed to move staff beyond the passive receipt of information towards the active mastery and practical application of SOPs. The programme emphasised shared responsibility, accountability, and strict adherence to best practices in research implementation.

Officially opening the training, CIDRZ Chief Scientific Officer, Dr Monde Muyoyeta, highlighted the critical importance of confidentiality and data protection in research.

She urged research teams to consistently ensure that databases do not contain identifying information and that all participant data is handled with the highest standards of care and integrity.

“Confidentiality and privacy are fundamental ethical considerations in any research involving human participants,” Dr Muyoyeta said. “As a general principle, research data should be anonymised to minimise the risk of harm to research participants.

Dr Muyoyeta further emphasised that excellence is a non-negotiable standard in clinical research and trials, noting that every team member plays a critical role in upholding quality. She cautioned that a lapse in any single area can compromise the integrity and credibility of an entire study.

“Excellence is not optional in the conduct of clinical trials and research. Every individual contributes to overall quality, and even a minor breach can undermine the credibility of the research,” she added.

Building on the emphasis on quality and compliance, Mr Michelo Simuyandi, a Senior Research Scientist in the Basic Science and Immunology Department at CIDRZ, highlighted the central role of Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) in achieving high-quality research outcomes.

He explained that SOPs promote consistency, safeguard participant safety, and ensure regulatory compliance across all research activities.

Participants praised the training as timely, insightful, and highly relevant to their roles. Mr Mathews Siulapwa, Laboratory Quality Assurance and Quality Control (QA/QC) Manager at CIDRZ, particularly appreciated the focus on the critical role of Standard Operating Procedures in ensuring standardised practice, high-quality data, and strong research outcomes.

Meanwhile, Mr Seversky Buyala, a Research Assistant, described the training as highly educative. He noted it will improve efficiency, strengthen adherence to procedures, and enhance day-to-day research operations.

Other participants commended CIDRZ for the initiative. They highlighted the importance of continuous capacity building to maintain competence, compliance, and efficiency. The training underscores CIDRZ’s commitment to excellence and ensures its research meets national and international standards.
