Empowering Women through Sewing in Zambia.

Meet Esther Dube, a single mother of seven, and Late Moonga, a mother of five, from Magwama village in Chikupi, Kafue district. They are beneficiaries of a sewing machine under CIDRZ’s United States Agency for International Development (USAID, Empowered Children and Adolescents Program (ECAP III) project.

Before receiving the sewing machine, life was a daily struggle for both, with limited means to provide for their families. However, the arrival of the sewing machine marked a turning point. They started making school uniforms and offering clothing alterations, quickly turning it into a thriving business.

“The sewing machine changed everything,” shared Esther Dube, grateful and determined. “We now provide for our children, we are able to buy school uniforms, and ensure we have enough food.”

Beyond the income they generate, the machine gave them purpose and hope. They have received significant orders, like one from a local church, validating their efforts and showcasing their business potential.

Their success story is a testament to ECAP III’s impact. Distributed by CIDRZ and USAID, this initiative equips individuals with skills for sustainable community development. Esther’s and Late’s journey demonstrates how targeted support can transform challenges into opportunities, fostering resilience and empowerment in their community. Their story inspires growth, showing how empowerment and resources can lead to sustainable and improved livelihoods in Zambia.

“We are grateful to CIDRZ and USAID, they have given us not just a sewing machine, but hope for a better future. With dedication, we can achieve great things,” said Esther
