The Centre for Infectious Disease Research in Zambia (CIDRZ) proudly participated in the Resident Doctors Association of Zambia (RDAZ) Scientific Conference and Annual General Meeting held in Siavonga, which brought together over 300 resident doctors from across the country.
The meeting was officially graced by Minister of Health, Dr Alex Katakwe, and held under the theme: “BUILDING A BRIGHTER FUTURE: Advancing science, innovation and workforce strengthening for a resilient health system in Zambia.”
CIDRZ contributed through two scientific presentations. Dr David S. Singini delivered a session on innovations in tuberculosis (TB) diagnostics and treatment, tracing the evolution of diagnostic methods from the 1800s to modern technologies. He encouraged resident doctors to actively engage in research and innovation, particularly in developing locally relevant diagnostic and screening tools.
Meanwhile, Dr Bavin Mulenga presented on the World Health Organization (WHO) PEN-Plus programme being implemented by the Ministry of Health and CIDRZ, showcasing efforts to strengthen the management of non-communicable diseases (NCDs) at the primary health care level. His presentation focused on ensuring that the doctors, especially those based at first level and district hospitals, understand the PEN plus model, support the scale up process, resource mobilisation and training and mentorship activities.
The RDAZ Scientifc conference and AGM provided a valuable platform for knowledge sharing and collaboration, reinforcing CIDRZ’s commitment to advancing research, innovation, and partnerships to strengthen Zambia’s health system.
