CIDRZ’s PEN-Plus Programme Strengthens Community Trust and Promotes Preventive Healthcare at Matero First Level Hospital Open Day.

CIDRZ’s PEN-Plus Programme joined the recent Open Day at Matero First Level Hospital, an engagement aimed at strengthening community trust, improving awareness of available health services, and promoting preventive care for non-communicable diseases. The event also created space to inspire and attract future health professionals by showcasing patient-centred care in action.

Speaking at the event, Dr Astridah Maseka commended all participating organizations and the hospital for spearheading the initiative.

She particularly praised the CIDRZ PEN-Plus Programme for its dedicated and consistent support in the management of diabetes and hypertension, highlighting that such collaborative partnerships between health institutions and implementing partners are essential in ensuring continuity of care and improving long-term patient  outcomes.

“We do not just treat symptoms, we walk alongside you as partners in care, empowering you with knowledge, support, and practical tools to create and sustain a healthier lifestyle for the long term,” she emphasised.

The PEN-Plus model brings specialized care for severe, chronic conditions like Type 1 diabetes, sickle cell disease, and rheumatic heart disease directly into communities, making expert support more accessible than ever.

Through support from the Centre for Infectious Disease Research in Zambia (CIDRZ), PEN-Plus clinics are now accessible in several facilities across the country, including: Matero First Level Hospital (Lusaka), Mwachisompola First Level Hospital (Chibombo District), Chifubu Level 1 Hospital (Ndola),Chipata District Hospital (Chipata) and Kapiri Mposhi First Level Hospital (Kapiri Mposhi).

This initiative is closing the distance between communities and expert care, ensuring patients receive timely, high-quality, and transformative treatment right where they live.
