CIDRZ Supports Southern Province Epidemic Preparedness, Prevention, Control and Management Committee Meeting in Monze District

The Centre for Infectious Disease Research in Zambia (CIDRZ) joined the Provincial Epidemic Preparedness, Prevention, Control, and Management Committee in Southern Province for a two-day high-level meeting in Monze District, to enhance the province’s readiness to prevent and respond to public health threats.

Opening the meeting, Southern Province Permanent Secretary, Dr Naamani H. Monze, emphasised the importance of multisectoral collaboration in tackling emerging and re-emerging public health emergencies.

“This is a critical moment to strengthen public health security through collective action. Southern Province faces emergencies such as Mpox, cholera, malaria, and maternal and neonatal mortality, worsened by droughts and floods, which increase vulnerabilities among children and adolescents,” Dr Naamani said.

He also highlighted recent trends and priorities for epidemic control, leading to the creation of a provincial cholera task force and directives for all districts to implement urgent measures, including enhanced surveillance, risk communication, and improved water and sanitation.

“At the close of 2025, the province recorded 43 cases and three deaths from cholera in Monze, and one death in Gwembe District. This outbreak underscores our renewed focus on priority areas for multisectoral interventions,” Dr Naamani added.

Speaking on behalf of CIDRZ, Dr Theodora Savory, Director of Strategic Information, reaffirmed the organisation’s support for the epidemic preparedness, prevention, control, and management meeting, highlighting the importance of proactive planning and strong partnerships in strengthening Zambia’s health system.

“We believe that the strength of our national health system is not just measured by how we respond to illness, but by how effectively we prepare for the future and prevent outbreaks,” Dr Savory said.

She also highlighted CIDRZ’s focus on preventive health and partnership with provincial and national health authorities to ensure preparedness investments reach facilities and communities.

“At the core of our mission is a simple but powerful philosophy – prevention is our best defense. Whether through infectious disease control, maternal and child health, or health systems strengthening, CIDRZ prioritises preventive health. Investing in preparedness today reduces the burden on health facilities tomorrow and saves lives,” she further highlighted.

CIDRZ reaffirmed its commitment to working alongside the Government of the Republic of Zambia to build a resilient, people-centered health system.

The meeting brought together representatives from the Provincial Administration, Ministry of Health, Ministry of Education, Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock, Ministry of Green Economy and Environment, Ministry of Water Development, Southern Water and Sanitation Company, Water Aid, World Vision, Zambia Red Cross Society, Care International, the District Administration, and Local Authority.
